World Wetlands Day occurs on the 2nd of February, every year. It marks the date of signing the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands on 2nd February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that embodies the commitments of its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of international importance and to plan for the sustainable use of all of the wetlands in their territories.
Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of this opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
The Convention’s Web site has posted reports from more than 95 countries of World Wetlands Day activities of all sizes, from lectures and seminars, nature walks, children’s art contests, sampan races, and community clean-up days, radio and television interviews, letters to newspapers and finally the launch of new wetland policies.
