The “The Restoration and Economic Development of Zarqa River Basin” Project, is one of the demonstration projects within the REWARD Programme initiated by the DGCS/ WESCANA Project and supported by the IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI), funded by DGIS/ The Netherlands.
The REWARD Programme has worked in close consultation with the Jordan Ministry of Environment on a long-term strategy for the restoration of the basin. A new strategy was formed for action that started in 2009 with funding from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and from UNDP.
Critical issues were tackled, how to restore natural flows by making better use of groundwater and surface water and tackling profound problems of river pollution by domestic waste water from Amman City. Solid waste pollution was also adressed, along with industrial contaminated water that pours into the river basin.
