THE WORLD'S LARGEST NATURAL ASSEST
Covering more than a third of the earth's surface and half of the world's ocean area, the Pacific Ocean encompasses the shorelines of some 50 countries, states and territories and is home to hundreds of millions of people. It is the world's single largest geographic feature. It contains an enormous biodiversity and complex ecosystems, including large numbers of endemic and endangered species and supports the planet's carbon and water cycles
AN OCEAN UNDER THREAT !
The recently launched Pacific Ocean Synthesis Report and Scientific Consensus Statement provides a scientific review of these trends and impacts and calls for serious actions to safeguard the future health and productivity of the Pacific Ocean and the livelihood of its peoples and their vulnerabilities. The report identifies four main threats to a healthy Ocean:
- pollution
- habitat destruction
- overfishing and exploitation
- climate change
- all being the result of unsustainable human activities.
A WAY FORWARD !
A healthy and productive ocean by 2020 will require new kinds of commitments and partnerships at a scale seldom seen before from Pacific rim countries, private enterprise and the communities and individuals that share the Ocean.
IUCN is calling for partners to do the following:
- to produce a Pacific Ocean Report which summarizes the economic value & impacts of the threats defined by the scientific consensus statement
- identify a process that will develop a Pacific Ocean 2020 Strategy that provides targets and solutions to ensure the sustainable management and conservation of the Pacific Ocean by 2020
- Endorsement of the report through APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and other major fora
