The southernmost country of Scandinavia, Denmark is made up of the Peninsula of Jutland and 443 islands. Its diverse nature is preserved by a solid commitment of Danish people to conserve this heritage. In 1973 Denmark was the first country in the world to implement an environmental law. These efforts continue today. Denmark hosted the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2009 and is at the forefront in Europe for local administrations’ work for biodiversity conservation. More than one fifth of Danish cities and villages committed to concrete action through the IUCN’s Countdown 2010 initiative and are still active today.

Denmark hosts an EU expert meeting on IPBES
Over 80 experts recently gathered for a workshop of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) to discuss the proposed work programme of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The workshop was held in Copenhagen under the Danish Presidency of the EU and is part of the intersessional process ahead of the next IPBES Plenary Meeting in April 2012. Read more

Denmark took over the Presidency of the European Council on 1 January 2012 from Poland in an international context dominated by two crises: an economic crisis, which is causing Euro and sovereign state debt troubles across Europe, and a global environmental crisis, overshadowed by the previous one. The impacts of agriculture on nature
Three Danish IUCN Members – the Danish Outdoor Council, Birdlife Denmark and the Danish Society for Nature Conservation – recently released a publication on the agricultural industry in the country. A number of other Danish environmental organizations cooperated in the effort. Read more
