Translating the St Petersburg Declaration into Action
Russia accounts for 22% of the world’s forest cover. Despite the relatively low contribution to the national GDP, Russia’s forests are of major local, national and global significance. Their direct contribution to rural (and generally more impoverished) areas has a significant potential for increase in terms of jobs and tax revenue and they are particularly important with respect to supporting subsistence rural livelihoods. …

A database of Regional Protected Areas in Central European Russia
Founded more nearly a century ago, the existing Russian system of protected areas includes more than 15,000 reserved territories with different goals and protection mode. Zapovedniks (strict nature reserves) and national parks have federal status and play the key role in preservation of unique natural complexes, specific evolutionary and ecologic processes, but regional protected areas are of no less importance for the conservation of biodiversity. …

National Action Plans to Control Illegal Logging in Europe and North Asia
This three-year project aims to support country-level implementation of the policy commitments of the 2005 St. Petersburg Ministerial Declaration on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) in Europe and North Asia. Funded by the European Commission’s European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument, this project will promote the development of improved forest law enforcement and governance arrangements in seven targeted countries: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. …
