New staff: Petch Manopawitr, Deputy, Southeast Asia Group

IUCN welcomes Mr. Petch Manopawitr to join as the Deputy, Southeast Asia Group (Thailand, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) with effect from 01 April 2014. Mr. Manopawitr will be based at the IUCN, Asia Regional Office in Bangkok, Thailand.

Under the guidance of the Head, Southeast Asia Group, Mr. Manopawitr will be responsible for coordinating, managing and continuing to develop the ongoing programme, including supporting development of programme staff capacity, fundraising, and communications in these Southeast Asian countries. He will also ensure effective and timely development, planning, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of an integrated and coherent programme for emerging country programmes in Myanmar and Indonesia, and further into the future in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Mr. Manopawitr has over 17 years experience in the fields of wildlife conservation, protected area management and biodiversity research. Having worked for several national and international Conservation NGOs, he has overseen a diverse conservation programme and coordinated biodiversity conservation projects extensively with local and international experts both in terrestrial and marine environment. During his years as Conservation Programme Manager for WWF Thailand, Deputy Director for WCS – Thailand Program and Vice-Chairman for Bird Conservation Society of Thailand, he has written and compiled a number of training manuals, reports and books concerning biodiversity conservation, biodiversity monitoring, wildlife research techniques and environmental education. He also played a leading role in developing site-based conservation strategies and endangered species action plans in close collaboration with relevant government agencies. His current doctorate research at the University of Victoria in Canada is focusing on the development of resilient Marine Protected Area networks to climate change impacts in the Andaman Sea.

Mr. Manopawitr holds a Master's degree in Zoology and Tropical Ecology from James Cook University, and was a former Fulbright’s Humphrey Fellow at Cornell University, a Global Fellow in Marine Conservation at Duke University, a Visiting Fellow at Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and a Thai delegate in US State Department International Visitor Leadership Program.
