The IUCN Asia Regional Office (ARO) based in Bangkok, Thailand, was established in 2002. The Asia programme originates from projects and initiatives from the early 1980’s. Since 1999, the Asia programme has initiated and overseen both Regional and Country Programmes and projects in over 20 countries across Asia.
Today, IUCN’s Asia Regional Office is the heart of IUCN’s operations in the Asia Region, overseeing ten country offices (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Laos PDR, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam). The Asia Regional Office is also home to a major thematic unit, Ecosystems and Livelihoods, as well as larger regional and global initiatives such as the Mangroves for the Future (MFF), and the Livelihoods and Landscapes Strategies programmes.
