On June 30, 2011, the Center for Environment and Community Research (CECR), with support from International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the U.N. Democracy Fund (UNDEF), launched a website (http://www.cecr.vn) on the condition of lakes in six districts in Hanoi.
In 2010, CECR published a report that showed that many of Hanoi’s lakes had been heavily encroached and polluted. The new website will link environmental specialists, local authorities, businesses, and individual citizens working to protect these iconic lakes. The 2010 report can be downloaded from the website.
The website launch attracted a lot of attention. It was covered by 10 print and 60 online newspapers and the website has received numerous comments from readers who share CECR’s passion to preserve Hanoi’s lakes. In August, CECR circulated its first e-newsletter.
In August, the Hanoi lakes website reached the final round of the “Bui Xuan Phai - For the Love of Hanoi” Award, an annual competition organized by the Sport-Culture Newspaper and the family of artist Bui Xuan Phai to honor activities with a high cultural and spiritual value.
