SEADocs – The Southeast Asian Student Documentary Award is a competition to encourage the art of documentary filmmaking in the region as a platform to engage with pressing social and environmental issues.

The 2012 competition invites students aged 18 – 28 in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam to submit a portfolio of their work and a motivational essay (pitch) on making a film under the theme “H2O: Sink or Swim”.

The winners for this year are:

  • First place: Gone with the Water by Polen Ly, Cambodia
  • Second place: Rasesalai by Narong Srisopap, Thailand
  • Third place: Rain Harvest by Khin Sina, Cambodia

The three regional winners are selected by an international jury and receive a cash prize of $500 each. Furthermore, the first place winner receives a grant of up to $5,000 to produce a feature length documentary in 2013.

SEADocs is part of the ASEAN Science Film Festival. The event has continued its extraordinary growth, reaching over 350,000 visitors in 2012 – smashing the previous record. It not only confirms, but truly cements the festival’s position as the most visited scientific film festival in the world and a significant cultural and educational initiative in the Southeast Asia region.
