Joint Author Meeting on Situation Analysis

On December 8, 2010, Authors, Experts and National Committee Members from Bangladesh and India met together in Bangkok to discuss the outline of the situation analysis papers commissioned for ‘Ecosystems for Life: A Bangladesh-India Initiative’ project.

IUCN Asia Regional Office is facilitating this initiative to bring together various stakeholders to enable collaborative action and research on water, food and livelihood security in the region.

A total of 25 participants from various disciplines from both the countries worked together and came up with common goals and mutually agreed on issues for joint research.

The meeting was presided over by Mr. Ganesh Pangare, Asia Coordinator of IUCN’s Water and Wetlands Programme. Mr. Pangare elaborated on the past events of the project and the future activities. He also explained the objective of the authors’ meeting.

Ms. Bushra Nishat and Dr. Nidhi Nagabhatla, Project Managers from Bangladesh and India respectively, shared outcomes of the multi-stakeholder meetings held Dhaka, Delhi, Kolkata and Gohauti in November 2010.

Following these discussions, the authors and experts from Bangladesh and India were divided into five groups according to Food security, water productivity and poverty, Impacts of climate change, Environmental security, Inland navigation and Biodiversity Conservation.

The thematic group discussions were followed by the joint presentations from each thematic group presented by experts from Bangladesh and India. The meeting concluded with an open discussion amongst the participants.
