Climate Change and coastal Cambodia first insights of VCA in Kampot
The Building Coastal Resilience project (BCR) IUCN officially launched the EU funded project. This 4-year project will build the capacity of people and the ecosystems on which they depend to cope with impacts of climate change in eight provinces
along the coastline between Bangkok and HCMC. the project will work in Koh Kong and Kampot Provinces. BCR IUCN Cambodia conducted workshop of
training of trainer on “vulnerability and capacity assessment” (VCA) to provincial line department, fishery community, forest community, community protected area, village chief and commune council in Preak
Thout commune, Teuk Chhou District, Kampot Province on 6-7 February 2012 at a meeting in department of environment. This workshop of training of trainer was attended 14 participants. This training-of-trainers event has objectives to:
- Increase the awareness, knowledge and understanding of line department and local communities regarding the potential impacts of climate change.
- Strengthen the capacity of line department and local communities to review and assess their exposure and sensitivity to climate change, including both climate and non-climate factors.
- Strengthen the capacity of line department and local communities to
review and assess their coping capacity and adaptive capacity, using
the information gained to plan and implement appropriate climate
change adaptation initiatives.
According to data information analysis through data collection from local communities was shown that, the vulnerability from climate change in these villages included: abnormal rainfall; climate has change; some time is very hot; some time is very cool; more win and storm; high seawater intrusion it made difficult to fishermen which fishing by hand push net and boat also and it impacts to crop and wet season rice in during October to December. These impacts factor above was impact to coral reef, sea grass and mangrove forest also.
In the future, if climate change is still increases it will has impacts not only natural resources and ecosystem but also it will more impacts to the local livelihood, which living a long coastal.
At the meanwhile, the Preak Thnout Commune chief has interesting and supporting to BCR project and he added that, this is the first BCR project which starts to do and implement the activity that relevant to climate change for finding the approaches to mitigation and strategy to cope and adapt to climate change impacts in this commune.
