Celebrating World Tourism Day 2013

IUCN Bangladesh country office has celebrated the World Tourism Day (WTD) jointly with the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) and Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC). A seminar was organized at the Banquet Hall of Hotel Abakash, Mohakhali, Dhaka to mark the day.  Mr. Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmad, Country Representative, IUCN Bangaldesh presented the key note paper on the theme of the World Tourism Day of this year which is “Tourism and water: Protecting our common future.” In the presentation Mr. Ishtiaq has underlined the relationship between water and tourism in Bangladesh and also the tourism´s responsibility and needed commitment to preserving the water resources. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Maqsudul Hassan, Chairman , BPC while  Hon'ble Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism  Lt. Col. (Rtd) Muhammad Faruk Khan , MP, attended the seminar as the Chief Guest and Mr. Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Secretary of the same ministry  was the Special Guest. …

As the world’s biodiversity faces the incessant threats of habitat loss, invasive species and climate change, there is an increasing need to consider more direct conservation interventions. Humans have moved organisms between sites for their own purposes for millennia, and this has yielded benefits for human kind, but in some cases has led to disastrous impacts. In response to this complex aspect of conservation management, the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Reintroduction Specialist Group (RSG) and Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) have revised and published the IUCN ‘Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations’. …

Students and teachers show passion to conserve medicinal plants in Bandarban, Bangladesh

IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), Bangladesh Country Office in association with BNKS (Bolipara Nari Kalyan Somity) conducted school programmes and teachers session this month at Bolipara union and Thanchi upazila Bandarban Hill District of Bangladesh. These programmes helped the students as well as the teachers to discover the value of medicinal plants and traditional knowledge in their own communities. “Trees are our friend. We can produce our own drug by medicinal plant cultivation surrounding our school and homestead areas”, students and teachers told IUCN with enthusiasm.
