IUCN and Marriott International join hands for community-based environmental conservation and development in Thailand
BANGKOK, THAILAND - 19 September 2013 – IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Marriott International have launched a partnership to protect the environment and support Thailand’s local communities through mangrove restoration, the use of sustainable seafood sources and local procurement practices in Bang Krachao and areas in the South potentially to include Mai Khao, Tai Muang and Khao Lak. The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding today and opened a “Mangrove Education Garden” at the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel, followed by a planting of 100 mangroves by Marriott associates at Bang Krachao, often described as “the lung of Bangkok”. …

Protecting Asia’s Coasts for People and Nature
Hoi An, Viet Nam 11 September, 2013 - The 10th Regional Steering Committee of the Mangroves for the Future (MFF) initiative was opened today in Hoi An, Da Nang province, with representatives from the nine member countries convening to discuss efforts to protect coastal regions for people and for nature. IUCN-DNP collaboration for community involvement in Pang Sida National Park
From 11-16 August, tree-planting was carried out by communities living near Pang Sida National Park. Around 4,000 high-value timber tree species were sown on farmland. Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), IUCN, and 40 farmers from Bang Thankrabak and Bang Klong Nam Kheaw villages in Sakao Province participated in the event. The tree-planting aimed to cement a long-lasting relationship between the villages and the local conservation body; the Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment (PONRE). The objectives of DNP-IUCN collaboration are to improve management of protected areas, prevent illegal Siamese Rosewood logging, and to provide solutions for animal-grazing in the forest conservation zone. …
