The new Council of IUCN elected at the Barcelona Congress met for the first time in February 2009. The Council, among others, elected four IUCN Vice-Presidents and appointed four additional Councillors.
It approved Operational Guidelines for Private Sector Engagement and set a process in motion to develop a Private Sector Knowledge Network. Council also approved a Strategy for Antarctica and set up Task Forces to focus on strategic issues such as climate change, gender and biodiversity, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services. Decisions of the 72nd session of Council are available in the three languages on the Members Portal.
