Created in 1948, UCN is a unique partnership of States, Government Agencies and NGOs, representing the world’s largest environmental democracy. Mission is "to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable."

IUCN has always been a convener, bringing together members and stake holders to develop and negotiate solutions to environmental and development challenges. IUCN believes that conservation will succeed where there is capacity to act collectively and where actions are based on best available science. Today, the Union has 80+ States, 100+ Government Agencies, 800+ NGOs from about 140 countries.
