Between sessions of the IUCN World Conservation Congress, and subject to its authority, direction and policy, the IUCN Council has the responsibility for the oversight and general control of all the affairs of IUCN.
More specifically, its role as defined in the IUCN Statutes is to:
(i) set strategic direction and policy guidance for the work of the Union;
(ii) provide oversight and guidance on the performance of the components of the Union as a whole and of the Director General in particular, encouraging coherence among its component parts;
(iii) fulfil its fiduciary responsibilities to the Members of the Union and render account to them on the achievement of the Union’s objectives; and
(iv) support the Director General in communicating IUCN objectives and policy, and IUCN Programme to the world community.
The IUCN Statutes define the functions of the IUCN Council with more detail. provision The IUCN Council meets at least once a year and works in between meetings with the support of its Bureau.
The date and place of the next meetings of the IUCN Council are as follows:
• the 88th Meeting of the IUCN Council, 11 to 13 April 2016, at the IUCN Secretariat HQ in Gland, Switzerland
• the 89th Meeting of the IUCN Council, 31 August 2016, at the venue of the 2016 World Conservation Congress in Honolulu, Hawai’i, US
• the 90th Meeting of the IUCN Council, 10 September 2016, at the venue of the 2016 World Conservation Congress in Honolulu, Hawai’i, US
