A New IUCN Logo to Highlight Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability

20 July 2012 | Article

During June and July 2012, the Task Force on Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability led a cross-Commission competition to create a new logo.

This logo can be used when there is a special emphasis on youth engagement and collaboration across generations in Council, Secretariat, Commission, and Member projects, appearing beside the IUCN, Commission, or Member logo. First convened in September 2011, the Task Force will use this logo for its own visual identity.

The logo captures the themes of youth engagement and mutual learning and collaboration across generations in our work to realize the IUCN vision of a “just world that values and conserves nature.” The process was led by Rebecca Koss, Catie Burlando, and Dominic Stucker.

There were multiple high quality entries in the competition from graphic designers all around the world. We are grateful to all those who submitted a logo to the competition.

Young judges representing each Commission scored the logos based on a set of criteria. In addition to organizers, we are grateful for the input from judges Bruno Monteferri, Pranab Patar, and Regine Weckauf.

Although the judging was difficult due to the number of excellent entries, there could only be one winner. We are pleased to announce that the winning logo was designed by Ivan Onatra of Colombia. The Task Force on Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability congratulates Ivan on his winning entry. Ivan is an accomplished graphic designer. Visit his website here

To add an element of suspense, Ivan’s winning logo will only be unveiled at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Jeju, South Korea. The launch event will be held on the 9th September 2012 at 16:30 in the Just World Pavilion. We hope too see you and a diversity of IUCN staff, Commission members, Member Organization representatives, and Councillors there. Come and support the dawning of increased engagement of all generations in and through the Union for sustainability outcomes!
