Special Advisor on Climate Change
Johan Schaar is the Co-Director of the Vulnerability and Adaptation Initiative at World Resources Institute in Washington DC since February, 2012. Before that he led the Department for Policy Support at the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, in Stockholm. During 2007-2009 he was the Director of the international Commission on Climate Change and Development (CCCD), which was launched by the Swedish Government and chaired by the Minister for International Development Cooperation.
Prior to these assignments, Johan Schaar led the operation after the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Geneva. Between 2000 and 2005 he was head of the Division for Humanitarian Assistance and Conflict Management at Sida, Stockholm. He has a background in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, including assignments in South, East and South East Asia, and holds a doctorate from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
