The overarching goal of the BCTF is to act as knowledge broker between the behavioural sciences and those working to conserve biodiversity, in accordance to the 2021 World Conservation Congress Resolution WCC-2020-Res-064: “Promoting conservation through behaviour-centred solutions”. BCTF is an instance that can convene a diverse and multidisciplinary group of experts to produce best practice guidance documents that can help amplify the use of the knowledge collected across the behavioural sciences for conserving biodiversity

Diogo Veríssimo is a conservation marketer, using marketing principles and theory to influence human behavior and mitigate the threats faced by biodiversity. Diogo’s current portfolio of projects includes designing and/or evaluating more than a dozen behavior change interventions to reduce the demand for illegal wildlife products, such as song birds in Indonesia, bear bile in Cambodia, pangolin scales in China and sea turtle meat in São Tomé and Principe. In 2016, Diogo was recognized by the IUCN Commission of Education & Communication with their Young Professional Award and in 2017 by the Society for Conservation Biology, with their Early Career Conservationist Award. He was Vice-president of the International Social Marketing Association and a board member of the European social Marketing Association. Biodiversity conservation has only recently begun to incorporate communication and behavioural sciences, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, social marketing, and education, among others, as essential for achieving nature conservation. Given that human behaviour and our everyday choices are the main drivers of biodiversity threats, conservation efforts should concentrate on leveraging behavioural sciences. Their scientific methods and strategies can influence human behaviour and achieve positive change, thereby contributing to effective conservation initiatives.

The IUCN SSC CEC Behaviour Change Task Force is an inter-commission with representatives from the Species Survival Commission (SSC) and Commission on Education and Communication (CEC). 

This gender-balanced group includes experts from North and Latin America, Oceania, Africa, Europe, and Asia. They bring comprehensive expertise spanning diverse disciplines, including Psychology, Social Marketing, Communications, Economics, Behavioral Public Policy, Environmental Policy, Education, and Design Thinking.

The goal of the IUCN SSC CEC Behaviour Change Task Force is to produce guidance material to disseminate best practices, which could be utilised by other groups within IUCN network, such as Specialist Groups, or others working in the field of conservation, such as Zoos and Aquariums.

MISSION
The goal of the IUCN SSC CEC Behaviour Change Task Force is to act as a knowledge broker between the behavioural sciences and those working to conserve biodiversity.

Specialist Group work

The aim is to achieve the following goals by the upcoming World Conservation Congress, that will take place in less than two years' time:

  • Maximise synergies with other institutional groups working in the field of behavioural science and sustainability;  
  • Conduct a consultation across SSC, CEC and other relevant stakeholders in order to identify barriers to the use of behavioural change in conservation science;
  • Produce and publish guidelines for high-quality behavioural interventions in the context of biodiversity conservation;  
  • Develop freely accessible training materials and modules that can help build capacity across IUCN and more broadly in the biodiversity conservation field;
  • Produce an authoritative review of the knowledge to be published in Open Access.
